What is a golf simulator?

Used by professional players to work on performance, golf simulators allow to analyze a golf shot by providing accurate measurements. Many data, depending on the technology used, will be displayed immediately after the shot. These include the total distance of the ball, the launch angle, the backspin, the lateral deviation, the speed of the ball and many others. In short, a sensor for the golfer!
There are many, how to find your way?
There are indeed many golf simulators on the market. on the market. From a few hundred euros, to several tens of thousands of euros, there is something for every price. But be careful, not all are equal! The objective here is not to establish a complete comparison of all the products on the market, but to give you the essential information to know the different technologies related to the most interesting golf simulators.
Technologies : Radar, Photometric, Camera ... ?

The three main technologies used are radar, photometric and camera. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

- The "radar" or Doppler simulators generally have a box positioned behind the golfer (in relation to the axis of play which is in front. The simulator will "follow" the ball over several meters and will extrapolate the end of the ball's trajectory.

Advantage : right and left handed players can alternate without any impact on the simulator

Disadvantage: Is more appropriate outdoors rather than indoors because it requires a minimum ball flight time of several meters.

Two examples of recognized radar simulators: Trackman, Flightscope (Mevo+, X3)

- The golf simulators called "photometric " are positioned in front of the golfer and will capture several high resolution photos on the first 50 centimeters of flight.

Advantage : Much more suitable for indoor use because the ball does not need to fly for a long time so that the trajectory is calculated very precisely. Can also be used outdoors.

Disadvantage: The box must be moved between left and right handed

Two examples of recognized photometric simulators: Skytrak, Foresight (GC2, GCQuad)

- The "camera" simulators are installed above the ball on the ceiling. They generally have the advantage of being extremely accurate indoors with video recording of your club at impact with the ball.

Advantage: Right and left handed players can play. No risk of moving (voluntarily or involuntarily) the sensor.

Disadvantage: Cannot be moved once installed (not for use on your golf course).

Two examples of recognized simulators: Bravo Golf, TruFlight2 from TruGolf. We can also mention the GC HAWK from Foresight as a complement.

Why do we choose Skytrak, Mevo+ and Bravo?
Our room in Toulouse allows us to continuously test new technologies as well as the different components that are necessary for the installation of a golf simulator.
There are several technologies/brands that we have tested and that we will clearly not recommend due to their much lower price/performance ratio than the simulators listed here.
We have simulators available in our room for golfers to practice 6 days a week. We also accompany hundreds of golfers in their projects. Our number one priority remains their satisfaction and that is why we will never deviate from this line of conduct. To offer them the best, at the best price possible.
However, in some specific cases, we recommend simulators that are not necessarily very well positioned in terms of quality/price ratio, but which are excellent! I'm thinking of simulators like Trackman or GC Quad from Foresight, which are very expensive but which are terribly efficient top-of-the-range references. But clearly in these cases, the budget is generally not the strongest constraint ...
Our COMPLETE and FREE guide available at the bottom of the pagewill give you all the details on these different simulators.
How much space is needed to install a simulator?
Some technologies like Skytrak can be installed as long as you have room to swing.
We give concrete examples with 3D drawings in our free guide at the bottom of the page. This will answer all your questions about the space needed according to your expectations (about the technology, about being able to play left/right handed or not etc...).
But the quick answer is that the minimum dimension is 300cm wide by 450cm long. The recommended ceiling height is also 300cm. It will be possible, depending on the size of the golfer and his swing type, to make the first installations from 270cm of height under ceiling.
Are we sure of the accuracy of the data offered by the simulators?
Thousands of tests for millions of shots played. Robot tests for most of the simulators, checks with real ball flights ... In short, it is certain today that professional technologies are ultra efficient and very faithful on the trajectory and the measured or calculated data.
And if all the professional players are now equipped, it is a telling sign about the performance and usefulness of simulators.
What are the main training options?
You will always find small differences between the different simulators, and we will be happy to detail this if you wish to contact us or download our guide at the end of the page. But overall, we will generally find the following options on all simulators:
- Classic practice with data display
- Calibration of clubs
- Training on targets (green or fairway)
- Fun challenges with friends (approach or distance competitions)
My dream would be to play in Augusta, is that possible?
Very often, the course software is dissociated from the practice software delivered with the simulators. Depending on the simulator, there is more or less compatibility with the different course software on the market. It takes several pages to address this (which we do in our free guide) but if I had to summarize, here are the main options :
- TGC2019 software with over 170,000 courses, including Augusta. Skytrak, Mevo+, Bravo and TruGolf compatible
- E6 Connect software with over 100 routes. Skytrak and Mevo+ compatible
- GS PRO software with about 100 courses including Augusta. Mevo+, Foresight and Uneekor compatible
- Awesome Golf is more practice oriented but with some courses. Compatible with Mevo+ and Garmin R10
Is it really possible to set up on your own?
For several years, we have we are specialized in Do It Yourself installations. That is to say that the components we propose are studied to be easily set up by the golfers that we accompany at a distance. This includes PDF guides for the assembly and installation, the remote control on your computer for setting up or troubleshooting in case of problems. 100% 5-star reviews on hundreds of accompanimentsWe are confident that we can do it for you ;-)
